Helpful Information Regarding Wire Mesh

Is Shepherd PVC Coated Wire Mesh available in a variety of colors? Our standard PVC is black. We do offer coated wire mesh in green, lime green, yellow, orange, red and gray but availability of these meshes varies. Please inquire about custom color coatings for qualifying quantity orders.

Gauge refers to the size of the wire itself. All Shepherd mesh is designated by the gauge of the core wire, before coating. A helpful hint: the larger the gauge, the smaller the wire.

"PVC" designates our fuse-bonded PVC powder coating has been applied after galvanizing and welding. (PVC coated wire mesh is sometimes referred to as being vinyl coated or less often, plastic coated.)

"Galvanized" designates wire which has been galvanized only, with no PVC coating.

How big is a roll of wire mesh? Roll size is determined by four variables: (1) roll length; (2) roll width; (3) wire gauge; and (4) mesh configuration. These variables taken as a whole will determine the weight and overall size of a roll of wire. Click here to view a visual aid!

1. Roll Length: Most rolls of welded wire mesh are manufactured in standard 100 foot lengths. Heavier gauges and larger mesh sizes may only be available in 50 foot rolls. Lighter gauge PVC coated twisted mesh is available in standard 150 foot lengths.

2. Roll Width: For most mesh configurations, rolls are available in incremental widths from 18" to 72" but not all meshes are standard in all widths.

3. Wire gauge: Wire gauge refers to the single strand core wire from which the mesh is manufactured. Our standard line of wire meshes is available in sizes ranging from a heavyweight 11 gauge to a lightweight 23 gauge. Other gauges may be available in quantity in some mesh configurations. Sometimes a mesh is manufactured from two gauges, one for the line wire and one for the cross wire.

4. Mesh configurations. The mesh configuration (dimension) refers to the dimension of the opening in the mesh. Mesh configurations, e.g., 2" x 1", are denoted first by line wire (vertical) and then by cross wire (horizontal) spacing. If the space between two line (vertical) wires is 2 " and the space between two line (horizontal) wires is 1", the mesh configuration would be 2" x 1". Nonstandard mesh sizes, gauges and widths may be available as a custom product.
